Fred Tarasoff is considered one of Canada's foremost experts in retail loss prevention. He has more than twenty five years experience in retail and understands the cost of retail theft. In 1989 a record / gift shop he owned went under in a large part due to shoplifting. A few years later while managing a natural food store he became a victim of shoplifting when he was physically attacked. These two events inspired him to research how to better prevent, detect and deal with retail loss. Fred worked closely with various law enforcement agencies, loss prevention experts, retail associations and security companies as well as interviewed appoximately 300 shoplifters to better understand theft and how to best reduce both internal as well as external theft. In 2000 he developed a series of Shoplift Prevention Training programs for both retail management and employees with the emphasis focusing on deterring and preventing retail shrinkage. These training programs are available online as well as a CD-Rom format. Tarasoff also conducts training workshops and is a consultant in store layout and security risk analysis.
